A Japanese Restaurant in the Heart of Sydney’s Historic Trade Hub
Masuya is located in the heart of Sydney’s financial district, just steps away from the Japanese Consulate and JETRO. The building itself is a registered cultural heritage site and once served as the base where Fusajiro Kanematsu pioneered trade between Japan and Australia.

Guided by this history as a place that bridges Japan and Australia, Masuya Restaurant opened here in 1993. In 2006, the restaurant underwent a major renovation, adding a striking 5-meter sushi counter designed by Robert Toland. With bold red accents reminiscent of a Kabuki stage, the space harmoniously blends the heritage of the building with Japanese culture.
Whether it’s a quick, seamless lunch or a relaxed, indulgent dinner, Masuya welcomes guests with a diverse menu and attentive service.

Our Concept

At Masuya, we believe great dining is about more than food—it’s about the whole experience. Our dedicated table service and carefully curated pairings of dishes with wine and sake create a memorable time for every guest.
From fresh sushi and sashimi to grilled and fried specialties, salads, desserts, and seasonal hot pots, we offer a wide range of à la carte options. At the sushi bar, guests can also enjoy a chef’s omakase course. Each dish highlights the depth and richness of Japanese cuisine, brought to life with the finest seasonal ingredients.

Our Commitment

We value a service style where each table is served by one staff member. Our sommeliers recommend carefully selected wines at every table, and our sake list changes monthly with five new labels, offering fresh discoveries each visit. We are particular about our ingredients, sourcing Tasmanian salmon, southern bluefin tuna, Kagoshima A5 wagyu, Australian wagyu, as well as oysters, sea urchin, lobster, and seasonal Japanese vegetables. Especially for fish, we visit the market every morning to hand-pick the very best of the day. To enhance the dining experience, we serve our dishes on handmade ceramics crafted by potter Malcolm Greenwood. Through the harmony of cuisine, tableware, and service, we create a truly special time for our guests.

 For wagyu, we work with Australia’s leading suppliers, including Gowa, Hendra, Osawa Wagyu, and Vic’s Meat. Paired with fine wine or sake, they showcase the true luxury of Australian wagyu.
